Bentonite geocomposites

Composed of natural activated sodium bentonite (3 to 7 kg/m²) and two geotextiles, they are used as passive barriers for landfill sites, landfill sites, groundwater protection, lagooning, water retention and dike rehabilitation. They can be supplied with PE film.

Bentonite is available in powder or granulated form, packaged in bags or “big bags”.
It is also available in special formulations for directional drilling applications.

Avantages
  • Quick and easy to install,
  • Self-healing hydraulic barrier,
  • Shear-resistant,
  • Economical and environmentally friendly,
  • Good resistance to chemical pollutants.

The benefits of bentonite-based geosynthetics for public works

Bentonite-based geosynthetics, often referred to as bentonite geomembranes or bentonite geotextiles, have become essential materials in the public works sector. Their growing use is due to their unique properties and their ability to meet a wide range of construction and environmental challenges. This article explores the benefits of these materials for infrastructure projects.

Bentonite-based geosynthetics are composite products incorporating bentonite in a geotextile matrix. This blend exploits the waterproofing and swelling properties of bentonite, while providing a flexible, resistant structure. These materials are generally used to create impermeable barriers and to stabilize soils.

  1. Waterproof barriers :
Bentonite-based geosynthetics are mainly used to create waterproof barriers in projects such as landfills, reservoirs and building foundations. Their ability to expand and seal cracks when exposed to water makes them an effective solution against infiltration.
  2. Environmental protection :
In waste management, these Geosynthetics play a crucial role in preventing the migration of contaminants into soil and groundwater. They are often used in hazardous waste containment systems to ensure sustainable environmental protection.
  3. Land stabilization :
In road and infrastructure construction, these materials are used to improve soil stability. They help control erosion and stabilize slopes, reducing the risk of subsidence and landslides.
  4. Drilling and Underground Infrastructure :
Bentonite geosynthetics are also used for drilling and underground work. They help maintain the stability of tunnel walls and manage groundwater, which is essential for the safety and durability of underground structures.

Conclusion

Bentonite-based geosynthetics represent a significant advance in the field of public works. Their versatility, waterproofing properties and reduced environmental impact make them the materials of choice for a multitude of applications. As the challenges of sustainability and natural resource management become clearer, interest in these Geosynthetics will only grow, consolidating their place in the future of infrastructure and construction.
